Childcare Centre Audit Program
Over the past 2 years several regions, including Brisbane South, Brisbane North, Wide Bay and North Queensland, have conducted proactive audits of childcare centres.  These were conducted in consultation with the Queensland Department of Communities and relevant industry associations.  A wide range of private and not-for-profit childcare services were audited and, in some regions, the audits were run in conjunction with industry seminars and workshops.  The audits found that some childcare centres had implemented very successful health and safety management systems.  These included innovative ways to manage musculoskeletal risks such as installing steps at nappy change stations so that toddlers could climb up to the nappy change mat without having to be manually handled.

Licensing review committee
Licences are required for thirty-eight occupations in Queensland.   These occupations involve potential risks associated with operating certain plant and equipment. To ensure operators working within a prescribed occupation have the appropriate skills and knowledge, it is a requirement to undertake training and hold the appropriate authority (certificate/licence).  Our certification system provides assurance that the operators and users of high risk plant will have the required level of knowledge and skill to do this safely.

Workplace Health and Safety Undertakings with Government Departments
On 17 September 2007 Cabinet approved an administrative system of censure for government departments that commit serious breaches of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995.  The new administrative system involves seeking agreement by the Director-General of DEIR from the offending department to enter into a Workplace Health and Safety Undertaking.  These undertakings are to be modelled on the provisions of Part 5 of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995.

Workplace Health and Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2008
